How to Handle An Upset Stomach

How to Handle An Upset Stomach

There’s nothing like looking at your pup’s sad little eyes knowing he’s not feeling well.

As pet owners, it’s a look that you recognize fairly quickly. When you suspect your dog has upset stomach symptoms, it can tug at your heartstrings! To calm your nerves, we’ve put together a few common signs to look for in addition to remedies to set your pup at ease.

  • Lethargy and listlessness
  • Dry heaving
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Presence of blood in either feces, vomit, or urine
  • Passing gas more often than usual
  • Bloated belly

If you’ve seen any of these ailments, then your dog has upset stomach symptoms. Before you schedule an appointment with our office, there are some things that you can do to treat your pup at home.

Pepto Bismol

Administer one-half to 1 ml of regular strength Pepto Bismol per pound of your dog’s body weight. For instance, if your dog weighs 50 pounds, 25 ml to 50 ml of medication should be given every six to eight hours. Do not administer to pregnant or nursing dogs.

Tea

When your dog has upset stomach symptoms, you can give her ginger or mint tea. A standard coffee mug of either tea can be delivered to your small pup once per day. Medium to larger dogs can consume approximately three cups.

Bone Broth

This is a remedy you should prepare before your dog has upset stomach symptoms because it takes a full day to make. It’s best to have some stored in the freezer for “just-in-case” purposes. Of course, you can also purchase bone broth from a store. For at home preparation, merely simmer a whole chicken in a crockpot with apple cider vinegar and water. After the meat falls off of the bone, continue to simmer. The minerals and marrow from the bones will be released and absorbed in the apple cider vinegar water. Trim the fat from the meat and freeze the rest. Serve to your pup as ice cubes or in a bowl as their only meals for 24 hours.

Gatorade

Yep, you read that correctly. You can give your dog Gatorade. We recommend that you dilute it slightly with water and serve in their bowl with a bland diet for 24 hours after you have noticed that your dog has upset stomach symptoms.

When to Call The Vet

If your dog has upset stomach symptoms beyond 36 hours, you may want to contact our office for advice or an appointment. It could be an indication of something more serious.
